India Asks WhatsApp

As we know, After the WhatsApp's new Privacy Policy users are now opting for Telegram and Signal messaging apps to chat and communicate.

In the New WhatsApp Privacy Policy WhatsApp has explicitly mentioned that they are free to share user's data with parent company Facebook and Instagram.

Although on 16 Jan 2021 , WhatsApp has announced that it has opted to delay its new privacy policy changes by 3 months following strong negative reaction by a large number of people over companies data sharing practices.

Today on 19 Jan, The Indian government has asked WhatsApp to withdraw the recent changes in the privacy policy of the messaging app, saying that the unilateral changes are not acceptable.

The statement again proved to be a headache for the Facebook - owned WhatsApp. WhatsApp have also tried to give clarifications by making status updates to its users.

In a strongly worded letter to WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said "India is home to the largest user base of WhatsApp globally and is one the biggest markets for its services."
The proposed changes to the WhatsApp Terms of Service and Privacy Policy without giving users an option to opt-out, raise grave concerns regarding the implications for the choice and autonomy of Indian citizens.” it wrote.
So, the IT Ministry has asked WhatsApp to withdraw proposal changes and reconsider its approach to information privacy, freedom of choice and data security. WhatsApp has also been asked to explain if it conducts profiling of Indian users on the basis of their usage, as well as explain difference between the privacy policy in India and other countries. WhatsApp has also been asked to provide policy on data and information security, privacy and encryption.
